Targeting Older Populations to imProve Influenza ouTcomes (TOPPiT)

Overview

Learn how to improve vaccination rates & navigate vaccine hesitancy:

  1. Participate in an online Continuing Medical Education (CME) program; and
  2. Use a communication-based counselling tool with 10+ patients over the age of 65.

The Gerontological Society of America (GSA), in collaboration with a medical research company (JSS Medical Research) and the scientific planning committee will be measuring the impact of the learning activity and tool to better understand how they affect practice and patient outcomes. We will be sharing the results by email in Spring 2019.

Step 1

Please share your experiences with us regarding influenza and vaccination in older patient populations. Your feedback will help us understand what’s happening in practice and determine the long-term impact of this educational activity.

Estimated time: 5 minutes

Step 2

Description

This online program explores best practice when approaching older patients to discuss the importance of influenza vaccines. The goal is to reduce the risk of influenza in older patient populations as well as its associated morbidity and mortality rates.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this continuing education program, the clinician will be better able to:

  1. Discuss the impact of influenza on older populations
  2. Review the different influenza vaccine options for older patients
  3. Identify the steps required to improve influenza vaccine uptake in older patients
  4. Apply a structured approach to discussing and immunizing individuals with the influenza vaccine
  5. Manage commonly cited patient issues associated with a decrease in influenza vaccine uptake

Estimated time: 60 minutes

Please complete step 1 to Access

Step 3

Description

This tutorial video introduces the online Counseling Tool and demonstrates its applicability to practice. Other video resources can be found within step 2, including several patient simulations that demonstrates best practices.

Estimated time: 2-3 minutes

Step 4

Description

This online Counseling Management Tool uses the structured approach to vaccine administration discussed in the eCME. The evidence-based tool asks a series of questions to guide you through a vaccine visit and suggests the most appropriate vaccine for your patients, as well as potential counseling strategies to navigate vaccine hesitancy.

The Counseling Tool can be used with all patients regardless of age. To reinforce best practice demonstrated in the CME and corresponding videos, we recommend using the tool with 10 patients over the age of 65.

Estimated time: 3 minutes per assessment
